Austin's Mach 1 is a ’69 model with a 351 Cleveland engine. Austin loves Mustangs, especially fastbacks, and especially the models that came with bigger engines and performance packages. Austin’s Mach 1 is mostly stock except for its Midnight Blue metallic paint, rear window louver and Cragar mags (and the engine, see note below). Austin tries to give the Mustang to his friend Gene Pendleton as a token of gratitude, but Gene regretfully refuses. Later, Austin gives a drunk and distraught Lee Jordan a ride home from the Patty Waggin on Christmas Eve.
ERRATA
The 1969 Mach 1 did not come from the factory with the 351 Cleveland endgine. The offered engines were the somewhat tamer 351 Windsor and the big block 390 and 428 Super Cobra-Jet. The 351 Cleveland was introduced for the 1970 model year, replacing the 351 Windsor in the Mach 1’s engine choices. My specification of the Cleveland engine in the text was a mistake. But I’ve left the error intact during subsequent edits due to it being “possible” that either Austin or some previous owner may have swapped a Cleveland into it.
