- Gene is over 70 years old, a Vietnam Veteran and retired Teamster. He’s from Arizona but at the time of our story he and Doris have been serving as caretakers of the ghost town of Amboy, CA, where they live in their RV, parked behind the gast station and cafe. Gene has a taste for liquor both fine and common. He loves to hunt, especially elk in the mountains of Northern Arizona, but age has slowed him down in that pursuit. Gene and Wayne Conrad (Austin’s father) knew each other from their Army days back in Vietnam. We don’t know what happened because Wayne is gone and Gene doesn’t talk about the war, but we get the sense that somehow Gene feels he has an unpaid debt to Wayne, a debt which he seems to have assigned to Austin in the years after Wayne’s death.
